How To Restart Your Xfinity Gateway

Many common WiFi connectivity issues can be solved by restarting your Xfinity Gateway (our all-in-one WiFi modem and router). The process takes about 10 minutes, and you won’t lose your home network settings. If our system detects a problem that isn’t fixable using our online troubleshooting experience, we’ll offer the option to schedule an appointment with a technician.

What Happens During a Restart

During the restart process, you won’t be able to use your home network. If you have Xfinity Voice , you won’t be able to make or receive calls, including emergency 911 calls, from your home phone until your gateway is back online. If you have Xfinity Home, you will not have access to cameras and any connected home automation devices. Security sensors will not be affected.

Note: If restarting your Xfinity Gateway does not solve your connectivity issue, see Internet and WiFi Connection Troubleshooting for additional recommendations on improving your equipment’s performance.

Restart Your Xfinity xFi Gateway

If you rent an xFi Gateway, you can use the Xfinity app, which is available for free on the App Store and Google Play, and sign in using your Xfinity ID and password.

In the Xfinity app, scroll down to Connection Trouble and select Restart Gateway.

Restart Your Gateway via the Xfinity My Account App

  1. Open the Xfinity My Account app (available on Apple and Android devices).
  2. Scroll down and select the Internet tile.
  3. Select your modem, then select Restart this device (which can take up to seven minutes).

Restart Your Xfinity Gateway Online

  1. Log in to your account using your Xfinity ID and password.
  2. Scroll down and select Manage Internet.
  3. Select Restart Modem to begin troubleshooting.
  4. Select Start Troubleshooting to begin your modem restart. This can take up to seven minutes and your internet will be offline during this process.

Manually Restart Your Wireless Gateway, Modem or Router

You can manually restart your gateway, as well as most third-party networking equipment, by following these steps:

  1. Unplug the power cable.
  2. Wait one minute.
  3. Plug the power cable back in.

Advanced Features: Restart With the Admin Tool

  1. Make sure you’re connected to your home network.
  2. Open a web browser, type in http://10.0.0.1 to go to the Admin Tool, and sign in.
    • The Username and Password is not the same as your WiFi name and password. If you haven’t changed your Admin Tool login, the default settings are:
      • Username: admin
      • Password: password (case sensitive)
  3. Once signed in, navigate to Troubleshooting > Reset/Restore Gateway. From here, you have five reset options:
    • RESET — Restarts the gateway the same as unplugging and plugging it back in.
    • RESET WIFI MODULE — Turns off your gateway’s WiFi radio and then turns it back on.
    • RESET WIFI ROUTER — This is the same as rebooting a wireless router attached to a cable modem.
    • RESTORE WIFI SETTINGS — This completely restores your WiFi settings (e.g., SSID/WiFi network name, WiFi password) on your wireless gateway to the factory default values.
      • This results in being disconnected from your WiFi network, and you will have to reconnect all clients with the default network name (SSID) and password.
    • RESTORE FACTORY SETTINGS — This option completely restores your wireless gateway settings back to their factory default values, including firewall settings, managed devices, parental controls, WiFi credentials, etc.
      • The RESTORE FACTORY SETTINGS option will temporarily disconnect you from the network. If prompted, customize the WiFi name and password and reconnect devices to your home network using these credentials.

Note: A restart is different than a factory reset. A factory reset restores your gateway to its original default settings, including your WiFi name and password. If prompted, you’ll be required to create a custom WiFi name and password and reconnect devices to your home network using this information. To manually restore factory settings, follow the following steps depending on your gateway model.

  • Locate the Reset button on the back of the gateway and use a non-metallic pointed object (such as a toothpick) to hold in the Reset button for 30 seconds until all the LED lights power off.
  • If your gateway does not have a Reset button, locate the WPS button and hold it for 30 seconds.
