WiFi Issues On TCL Roku TV: How To Fix [2022]

Television has been part of the American lifestyle ever since it boomed in the 40s. And so, came the revolution of home media entertainment.

To stay in vogue, TV manufacturers often partner up with streaming companies to introduce a one-of-a-kind device that houses the best of both worlds.

The partnership between Roku and TCL has given birth to one such device: the TCL Roku TV. And in my opinion, it is a beast.

But just recently, I have been facing wifi issues on my TCL Roku TV. To fix this issue, I went to the support pages and user forums of the device.

This guide will help you fix the wifi issues on your TCL Roku TV.

WiFi issues on TCL Roku TV are commonly due to problems with the router. This can also occur if your device is not running on the latest firmware. Make sure you have disabled any firewalls or filters on your network. Change the WiFi channel or reduce the password character count and then try connecting.

Basic Network Connectivity Troubleshooting

Basic network troubleshooting

More often than not, the simple things may cause the issues that leave us in the dark. For instance, do not try to connect wirelessly while you have a wired connection plugged in.

Check your connection status. This will give you a well-found understanding of your WiFi and internet issues.

To check the connection status and speed, follow these steps.

1. On the Home screen, click and open Settings.

2. Scroll and select Network.

3. Click on Check connection to test the connection speed and status.

4. From the result, you can assess the status and connection details.

Make sure to take note of all the details. A red cross next to the wireless connection line indicates a connection failure with the WiFi. If the MAC address line is zeroed out, your device must be blocked by the router(more on this later).

Try these tips to solve the issue.

Check your WiFi Connectivity

Let’s try the old trial and error method. If you cannot establish a connection with your network, either the problem will be with your TV or the Router.

To find out the culprit, try connecting another device with the WiFi, like your phone or PC.

If you can connect the devices, you may have a substantial issue at hand. In such cases, either it might be a fried WiFi chip on the TV or some router intervention that impedes connection with the TV. If you cannot connect the device, check the router for issues.

Try connecting another WiFi network with your TV, like a wireless hotspot from your phone. If you can connect to the network, the issue is definitely with the router or the home network.

Alternatively, if you’re feeling lucky, you can even use a web browser on your Roku for some quick search to check if the internet is up.

Refresh the Network/Router

Most issues with the network can be resolved by a quick refresh unless you have modified any settings. The best way to refresh the connection is to do a power cycle on your router.

Unplug the device and plug it back in after a few seconds. This will wipe out any temporal bugs and errors on the router.

A refresh will also clear the ARP table of the router, meaning it will refresh the connection priorities. This will also refresh the MAC addresses and IP addresses stored in the router.

Try connecting your Roku TV now.

Change the Bandwidth

Another likely fix to try on the TV is to change the network. TCL Roku TVs have multi-band support, meaning you can connect to a wider bandwidth.

Try changing the connection to a 5GHz connection, a wider bandwidth, to forgo any latency and network traffic issues.

To change the network on your Roku TV,

1. On the Home screen, click and open the Settings tab.

2. Click on Network and select Set up a new Connection.

3. Click on Wireless and select the 5GHz band network.

4. Enter the password to establish the connection.

If you are already connected to a 5GHz band and have no access to the internet, try connecting to the traditional 2.4GHz band.

Even though it may have latency problems under heavy load, the 2.4GHz band provides a much better connectivity range when compared to the 5GHz band.

Forget the Network and Reconnect

Try removing the connected WiFi network and reconnecting to the same network after a quick restart. It has proven helpful even if it sounds absurd.

To remove the connection, follow these steps.

1. On the Settings tab, click and open Network.

2. Select your WiFi connection.

3. Click on Forget Network and select OK.

After a quick restart, reconnect to the network and check for problems.

Check for Interference

Interferences between the router and the TV can cause the connection to be glitchy. Make sure you have no other wirelessly transmitting devices in the vicinity of the TV.

Many cases of gadget (like a gaming console or a home automation device) interference have resulted in crippled internet connections.

Make sure to turn OFF the wireless transmission or relocate any such devices from the premises.

Try relocating the router to a nearer location if the signal strengths are unsteady.

Restart the TCL Roku TV

Restart TCL Roku TV

If your TV has been running for a long time, efficiency and ease of use may get affected by the bugs and errors that accumulate over time.

These bugs and errors can be cleared off by a simple restart or a power cycle test.

Simply unplug the TV from the socket, and plug it back in after a few seconds.

You can also try and restart the TV using the TV’s interface.

To restart the TCL Roku TV,

1. In the Settings tab, click and open System.

2. Click on Power, followed by the System restart option.

3. Then click on restart.

Wait for the TV to reboot and then, try connecting to a network.

Check for Updates

Running the TV on outdated firmware is like opening the doors for all the bugs and errors out there to roost on your system.

These bugs and errors will cause problems similar to the ones at hand, and they may not be limited to just connectivity problems, with one prominent issue being UI freezing.

Make sure you are running on the latest firmware to avoid such inconveniences.

To check and update to the latest firmware, follow these steps.

1. In the Settings tab, click and open System.

2. Select System Update.

3. Click on Check now to manually scan for any updates.

Apply the updates, if any, and restart the device. Try and connect to a network after restarting the device.

Check the Time Setting on TCL Roku TV

Check time settings

Proven to be an area of possible bug infestation, this setting should not be overlooked as an improbable culprit.

Setting the time on your device has become a necessity, especially if you want to avoid possible network issues.

By default, it will be set to adjust automatically through the available network. You will have to disable this option and manually set the date and time.

To do so, follow these steps.

1. In the Settings tab, click and open System.

2. Click on Time and then select the Time zone option.

3. Disable the Set automatically tile and select the Set manually option.

4. Proceed to enter the right time zone.

5. You can also choose the clock format if you want to and then exit the menu.

After a quick restart, try connecting to the WiFi.

Disable any Filters and VPNs on the Network

Pi-holes and other filters may help you play it safe in the long run, but they may also cause connectivity issues on certain devices.

Likewise, VPN services also hinder connectivity by providing high latencies and unstable signal strengths.

It is highly recommended to disable such contraptions on the network as a probable solution for this issue.

Most filters can be disabled through your PC since most of them are provided through independent software apps.

Other masking filters that you have enabled on your network may require professional assistance. Contact your ISP for further assistance.

Check the Router Settings

Check the router settings

Changes made to the router can affect the connectivity with your Roku TV. Make sure to revert these changes to default and then try connecting.

You can access these settings by connecting the router with a PC and opening the router portal through a browser. Once you have connected the router, enter the IP address of your Router onto the search bar of the browser.

You will have to log in to your account by entering the login ID and password. Default credentials- ID: Admin, Password: password.

Then try these steps and check for connection.

Changing the Password and Downgrading Security

A complex password for the WiFi can make the connection cumbersome. Make sure to change a complex password to a simpler one. Try avoiding numerals and special characters in the password.

If changing the password was unsuccessful, try removing them completely. This is a great way to check if the problem is with your password. If you were successful in establishing a connection, try a simpler password for the WiFi.

Another helpful tip is to change the security level/protocol of the WiFi. If you have set the encryption standard to TKIP/AES, try changing it to less secure AES/WPA2-PSK encryption.

You can change all of these settings by accessing the WiFi menu once you have logged into the account.

Switch the WiFi Channel

Changing the WiFi channel can make your connection more stable and efficient. If the current channel has a high amount of traffic, you will not be able to get a proper connection on your TV.

To change the channel, you will have to find the Wireless connectivity settings under the Advanced setting on your router portal.

Once you select this menu, you will be able to find the channel in use. Make sure to select 1, 6, or 11 for the 2.4 GHz band and the lowest available channel for the 5GHz band.

Check the Mac Address Filtering List

While checking the connection status on your TV, if the MAC address line was all zeros, your device might be blocked by the router.

You can confirm this issue by checking the MAC address filtering list on your router portal.

Try and find the portal under the WLAN or Wireless connectivity option. Check if the MAC address of your TV is on the list. If so, remove it from the list

After a quick restart, try connecting to the network.

Check the DNS Setting

If you have changed the DNS address on your router to a different one, you might face problems with the connection. Error codes like 014, 014.30, 014.40 are all associated with network errors.

Try reverting the DNS to the ISP recommended one and restart the device. Check the connection now.

Factory Reset the TCL Roku TV

The last straw, so to say, is to reset your Roku TV. A hard reset will remove all the temporal bugs and dormant files that eat up the memory and render the system slow.

It will also reset all your personal preferences and settings, leaving the system in its factory state.

To factory reset the TCL Roku TV,

1. In the Settings tab, click and open System.

2. Click on Advanced System Settings.

3. Select Factory Reset and enter the special code.

4. Click on OK to confirm the reset.

Wait for the process to complete and then reconfigure your Roku TV.

You can also reset the Network connectivity setting on the TV, simply select the Network Connection Reset option within the Advanced System settings tab. Click on Reset connection to refresh the network settings on your TV

Final Thoughts

Network issues are always frustrating. Whether it’s a simple mismatch with the password or a complex DNS setting-related error, it will leave you frazzled.

Moreover, such issues can affect the download speed of the device too.

If none of the above works for you, chances are, the problem is with the hardware. Contact the customer services of Roku and TCL for issues with your TV and the ISP, if you have issues with the router/network.

Happy Streaming.
